The first of many SOUTHDALE expansions was added to the northeast side of the center. A thirty-three-store Gallery Court wing (in medium gray) was inaugurated in October 1971. Its anchor department store, J.C. Penney, opened in March 1972. The project also added a multilevel parking garage to the complex.

The mall's second major enlargement was built between 1989 and 1992. It brought a new Dayton's and two parking garages. The old Dayton's (in medium gray) was sectioned into three floors of inline store spaces, including an 11-bay Food Court. Its basement housed additional space for the new Dayton's.
