The earliest competitor of GATEWAY MALL had been CENTRAL PLAZA MALL, which opened in stages between 1952 and 1958. It was an open-air, cluster-type complex anchored by W.T. Grant, Publix and Montgomery Ward.

Major competitors such as TYRONE SQUARE eventually usurped GATEWAY MALL. The past-its-prime property was demalled between 1998 and 2000, with GATEWAY MARKET CENTER taking its place. That venerable Minneapolis merchandiser opened a GATEWAY store in March 1999.
