The early 2000s remodeling -and Great Recession- bankrupted the owner of HILLDALE CENTER. By 2010, the complex was in foreclosure. A New England company bought the mall in 2012 and were soon busy with a first phase demalling project. Between 2014 and 2015, the North Wing was partially demolished and rebuilt in an open-air format.

The new North Wing -officially known as The Plaza- is shown in light gray on this circa-2015 layout. It brought several tony stores into the mall, such as Sur La Table, Michael Kors, White House Black Market and Lucky Brand. The enclosed South Wing would remain as is...at least for the time being.
