In the end, the mid-'80s mall reinvention was unsuccessful. By the
turn of the 21st century, the complex was in a downward spiral. A
wrecking ball renovation got underway in early 2003. The north-south
and east-west concourses -and the old Jordan Marsh- were knocked down.
Three remaining anchors were worked into an open-air power plaza of
fifty-eight stores and services.
