Maryland's Wheaton Plaza

WHEATON PLAZA was DC's first mega-sized shopping hub. The first thirteen stores were dedicated in February 1960. A second Grand Opening was held in March of the same year. The complex was the region's largest shopping mall; a distinction held until July 1968, when Virginia's new TYSONS CORNER CENTER opened for business.

Montgomery Ward was the second anchor of the original mall. The store, reputedly the largest branch in the chain, also opened its doors in February 1960.
