The first stores in Sac-Town's SOUTHGATE CENTER were inaugurated in October 1960. The complex was opened in four phases between October 1960 and August 1961.

The grand opening of Sac-Town's SOUTHGATE came complete with just
about everything one could expect at a mid-century mall dedication.
There were strolling magicians, singers, square dancers. a man on a
swaying pole, unicycle and trampoline acts, a trained dog show
and"entertaining" monkey!
