New York City's Roosevelt Field Center


CROSS COUNTY CENTER, the first mall-type shopping center in Greater New York City, opened in April 1954. The region's second mall was built in Nassau County's Town of Hempstead.

In its original state, ROOSEVELT FIELD CENTER had just one anchor department store. Macy's Roosevelt Field was a gigantic 4-level (343,000 square foot) facility. The store -and mall- welcomed first shoppers in August 1956.
