In its original state, GREAT NORTHERN MALL featured anchor-size J.C. Penney and Sears stores. The complex covered approximately 844,500 leasable square feet and housed 100 stores and services under its roof. Free parking was provided for over 6,000 autos.

A circa-1976 interior view shows the mall's dimly-lit shopping concourse. Malls built during this period often had very little interior lighting. It was thought that bright store interiors would draw in customers.
