MONTGOMERY MALL, the city's first fully-enclosed shopping center, opened in 1970 and was shuttered in 2008. In March 2015, the structure was renamed ONE CENTER. New vocational school campuses were dedicated in August of 2016 and 2017.

EASTDALE MALL was dedicated in 1977. It quickly became the preeminent retail venue in Alabama's capital.

By 1982, competition from the Capital City's two interior malls was starting to put the hurt on the SHOPPING CITY. It was given a face lift refurbishment and renamed NORMANDALE MALL.

The decline of NORMANDALE continued unabated. Montgomery's obligatory lifestyle venue, THE SHOPPES AT EASTCHASE, was dedicated in 2002. By this time, NORMANDALE had been in decline for a number of years.

A second expansion at NORMANDALE added an A & P grocery store to the northwest side of W.T. Grant. This addition, in place by 1963, is indicated in dark gray on this circa-2009 site plan. At that time, it was hoped that a buyer from Kansas City was going to do a much-needed renovation and restoration of the property. Unfortunately, this never panned out.
