In 1966 and '67, the mall was enclosed and climate-controlled. Signage was updated to reflect this change, with a small umbrella added to the logo.

Here, we see the new air-conditioned concourse at GULFGATE. The enclosure of the SHOPPING CITY was done as a reaction to the up-and-coming ALMEDA MALL, which was being developed on a site 6 miles southeast.

The mid-'60s roofing renovation was the only major reconstruction ever done. Following the enclosure, the official moniker would morph into GULFGATE MALL. This stage of the complex is depicted in this circa-1981 site plan.
