SOUTHGATE enjoyed its status as the only mall in the Quad Cities for only 10 years. It began a slow decline after the completion of Florence's REGENCY SQUARE, in 1978. SOUTHGATE was given a modest renovation in 1989. Some of the exterior embellishments installed then are still visible, such as this porte cochere at the Main Entrance.

Here we see interior decor from the 1989 redo. Apparently, the mall became lost in a time warp.

Our second SOUTHGATE plan dates to 2010. At this time, the mall is officially promoted as SOUTHGATE CENTER. WalMart, who defected from the old Woolco space in 1995, now inhabits a shadow anchor store in the mall's northwestern periphery. In the mall proper (in black), ten store spaces are leased. These have only exterior entries.
After years of decline, the SOUTHGATE property was partially demolished in late 2024. Front-facing stores, and the old Woolco building, were left standing and worked into an open-air venue, known as SOUTHGATE PLAZA. The parameters of the original mall are surrounded in blue on the site plan above.
