Development plans for the 59.4-acre site were first drawn up in 1963. A regional retail complex was to be built, but its backers ran out of money. The project was taken over by a joint venture of St. Louis' May Centers and Philadelphia's Strouse, Greenburg & Company.
MONTGOMERY MALL was located in the District's northwestern suburbs, on a site adjacent to an unincorporated section of Montgomery County known as Bethesda. The complex was the region's second "freeway friendly" mall. Alexandria, Virginia's LANDMARK CENTER was the first.
