Rhodes anchored SOUTHGATE CENTER for 15 years. The original store, ninth in the Oakland-based chain, was dedicated in October 1960 and consisted of a single level. The building was enlarged, with a second floor, in 1963.

W.T. Grant opened a SOUTHGATE CENTER store as part of a "Unit 4" phase of the shopping complex. The SOUTHGATE Grants welcomed first shoppers in April 1961.
