The chain originated in California. Operations extended to Arizona in 1993, the Pacific Northwest in 1995 and the Eastern United States in 1996. Today, stores encompass between 8,000 and 15,000 square feet. These "neighborhood groceries" carry gourmet, organic, vegan and exotic frozen foods. The chain is also known for its excellent selection of wines. Eighty percent of merchandise is sold under one of Trader Joe's many house brands.

Ventura, California's PACIFIC VIEW MALL and its 14,500 square foot Trader Joe's. The store commenced operation in June 2011 (the mall dates to 1964). Trader Joe's stores are usually located in freestanding structures or are part of small strip plazas. The few mall-based stores are either part of said mall (but having only an exterior entrance), or in a strip center in the mall's periphery.
