Southern California's LAKEWOOD CENTER. This plan shows the shopping hub as it was configured after its basic footprint was completed, in 1956. Hiram's and The Boys Market were outparcels of the main mall.

Long Island, New York's GREEN ACRES CENTER opened, with First National and Grand Union stores, in October 1956. Here we see the open-air mall as it was configured in 1960. As with LAKEWOOD CENTER above, the grocery stores at GREEN ACRES were outparcels of the main shopping center structure.

Here we see a mallway-connected set of grocery stores. Birmingham, Alabama's fully-enclosed EASTWOOD MALL held its grand opening in 1960. It housed Kroger and Colonial supermarkets. The Colonial would have stints as a Hills and then Winn-Dixie. Both stores were shuttered and repurposed as inline retail space in the 1970s, as mall-based supermarkets fell out of favor.
