Federal, the original south anchor of WESTGATE, re-opened in a new freestanding store in August 1961. In the meantime, Cleveland's Higbee's chain had acquired the original building (seen above) and was expanding it.

Higbee's Westgate opened in October 1961. It was the retailer's first branch. In this view, we see the Higbee's Westgate Budget Store, which welcomed its first shoppers in January 1966.
