A layout of a circa-1970 shopping mall 5 & 10. A candy counter, with clerk, was often located at the main entrance. Some may liken an olden days dime store to today's so-called "dollar stores". Such a comparison doesn't quite work, though. In addition to its -clerked- candy counter, a dime store would also feature a luncheonette, coffee shop or cafeteria. Moreover, there would be a pets section. In pre-PETA days, these carried live animals and reptiles, such as white mice, chicks, turtles and baby alligators!
