Los Angeles' Whittier Quad

Los Angeles' second mall-type shopping center was developed in the county's southeastern sector. Stores in the 5 million dollar complex opened for business between March 1953 and November 1954.

The mall was anchored by an Arcadia-based Hinshaw's. Its exterior employed the latest "modern California living" design. There were fifty departments -on 2 levels- and 43,000 square feet of retail area. The building was designed by Harold S. Johnson.

In its original incarnation, the QUAD provided one-stop shopping with thirty-one stores and free parking for 1,200 autos. These were new concepts in the early 1950s.
