NORTHGATE CENTER opened for business in April 1960 and was completed in stages over a period of 6 years. In this circa-1963 plan, we see that the open-air mall is about half finished. It encompassed 250,000 leasable square feet, but did not have a bona fide anchor store.

By 1966, the basic footprint of the mall had been established. Inline store space (in medium gray) fills in the mall corridor and Popular Dry Goods now anchors the east end. A cinematic venue was also in operation in the south parking area.
