Alas, where Kmart, Wal-Mart and Target succeeded, Woolco ultimately failed. 336 stateside stores closed, in unison, during January 1983. In Great Britain, Woolco held on until 1982, when its stores were converted to standard Woolworth operations. The Canadian stores division was purchased by America's Wal-Mart chain, with stores re-opening, under the Wal-Mart brand, in 1994.
