A mall-wide refurbishment was done between January 1988 and October 1989. An abandoned Wieboldt's was sectioned into several stores, with the largest being Carson Pirie Scott. The Food City Food Court was installed in existing space and Sears set up shop in the North Mall. Two separate cinema operations were consolidated into the new Ford City 14 megaplex, which opened in August 1990.

In this 2010 photo, we see signage promoting businesses in the North Mall strip center. Stores such as Sears, Anna's Linens and Office Depot have been shuttered since this image was taken. Conway (Fashion Discount) also came and went. Newer North Mall leasees include Fallas and Ross Dress For Less.
