The mall-to-be is seen in a circa-1969 rendering. It was being built on a 60-acre site, carved out of the Pompano Beach Air Park. When fully-realized, POMPANO FASHION SQUARE would be the first superregional mall in Broward County.

Burdine's became the first FASHION SQUARE store to open for business, in November 1969. It was the eighth branch in the Miami-based chain.

Jordan Marsh was one of four FASHION SQUARE anchors. The store made its debut during the mall's grand opening, which was held in January 1970.
