Sears, which anchors the south end of the shopping hub, predated the mall by nearly a year. The 3-level unit opened its doors in October 1966. During the early years, only the 2nd Level Mall of SUNVALLEY CENTER connected with the store.

By the early 1980s, the complex was officially promoted as SUNVALLEY MALL. Its only physical expansion added a fourth anchor. Bay Area-based Capwell's initiated construction of a 3-level (180,000 square foot) store in 1979. It opened, as an Emporium-Capwell, in February 1981.
