The Palmetto State's first enclosed mall was expanded on three occasions. Second levels were added to Meyers-Arnold and Ivey's in 1971 and 1972, respectively. In March 1973, a 6 million dollar renovation was announced. This would add twelve inline stores and a 2-level Belk-Simpson.

The New Mall expansion (in dark gray) was built onto the southeast side of McALISTER SQUARE. Dedicated in March 1974, it increased the leasable square footage of the complex to around 705,000 square feet. There were now fifty stores and parking for 3,400 autos.

Our third McALISTER SQUARE layout is dated 16 years after the previous plan. After enjoying several years as the only major mall in town, the SQUARE began to encounter competition from GREENWOOD MALL (1978) and then HAYWOOD MALL (1980). In 1990, the north and south anchors at McALISTER SQUARE have been rebranded. The mall is faring well enough, but a store exodus will soon be underway.

A keeping up with Haywood face lift was performed between 1992 and 1993. Decorative elements added to the mall's main entrance are seen in this early 2000s snapshot.
