Grand opening day at the new shiny new WASHINGTON SQUARE. Crowds are lined up to check out Sears, which anchors the north end of the facility. Sears has just moved from a center city location. It had opened, as Sears' first freestanding store, in October 1925.

Libs Candies was an original store and mall tenant for several years. Libs, which encompassed 896 square feet, was located in the center of the center. It faced a dramatic Dancing Fountain water feature.

In late 1963, the WASHINGTON SQUARE mall encompassed approximately 322,000 leasable square feet. There were twenty-two stores in the mall proper and five peripheral structures. Free parking was provided for 2,000 autos.
