Meanwhile, the south end supermarket had changed nameplates twice. Opened, in 1959, as a Colonial Stores, it had been converted to the Big Star brand in 1973. The store was briefly shuttered and re-opened, as a Harris Teeter, in 1984.

In July 1988, the mall's 4-year-old Harris Teeter was preparing to close for good. The shopping hub was in the midst of another conversion. The OUTLET SQUARE concept had been successful at first, but the newness and novelty had quickly worn off. Another remarketing and name change were in order. OUTLET SQUARE re-emerged as MIDTOWN SQUARE.

In early 1999, MIDTOWN SQUARE houses thirty-two stores, with around 77,900 square feet now taken by Burlington Coat Factory. The Food Court has also been expanded to seven vendors. In spite of this, the 289,000 square foot mall is caught in a downward spiral...
