The first shopping mall in "Huh-vah-ee" opened in August 1959, just
17 days before the islands became our 50th state. By the way, "Ala
Moana" means "Path to the Sea" in the native tongue.

One of many classic mall and retro retail internet sites, the MALL HALL OF FAME is a "Mid-mod" mall museum, covering shopping centers of America's mid-20th century (1950-1979). There are short articles, a few photos, and at least one physical layout drawing for every mall inducted. Please feel free to post any additional info you may be aware of. Thanks much.

My father went here a few years ago and said there was some sort of train to transport people from one side to another in the mall. What of you heard of this?

Jonah,
He's referring to the Pearlridge Center, an enclosed mall in Aiea, which is northwest of Honolulu.
The enclosed mall is situated with two seperate buildings...connected via a monorail line.
