To increase foot traffic at the shopping hub, a 12-bay Food Court was installed in the old Bullock's Wing in September 2004. The official name of the complex was truncated to WESTFIELD MISSION VALLEY in June of the following year. More recently (in early 2014), Loehmann's shut down. They had operated a store in the mall since 1996.
The east anchor at MISSION VALLEY operated under three different nameplates since opening, as a May Company, in February 1961. Macy's, its most recent tenant, pulled up stakes in March 2017. The Mid-Century Modern structure was designated as "historically significant" by San Diego's Historical Resources Board in January 2016. It is hoped that this action will spare the building from being given a wrecking ball renovation.
