In October 1983, a second phase mall was completed. It was colloquially referred to as GALLERY II, with the circa-'77 structure known (unofficially) as GALLERY I. The new GALLERY segment was anchored by J.C. Penney and incorporated the new SEPTA Market East Station, which opened in November 1984. This subterranean commuter train terminal replaced the circa-1893 rail hub at the Reading Terminal Market.
