As was the case in cities from coast to coast, Philly's suburban sprawl caused a massive decline of its urban core. As a countermeasure, a downtown shopping mall was proposed in the mid-1950s. Here we see a rendering from 1958 that shows the orientation of the prospective urban renewal retail hub.
