Work on a two-phase, 2-year-long, remodeling got underway in late 2016. A circa-2019 layout shows various features of the renovated and expanded shopping hub. These include a new Food District culinary complex, 11,000 square foot Public Plaza, multilevel parking garage and several "first-to-market" retail stores.

The first stores in the new expansion opened for business in April 2018, with dedications continuing until late in the year. With all construction dust settled, STATEN ISLAND MALL encompassed approximately 1,451,700 leasable square feet, cementing its position as largest suburban-type shopping mall in the five boroughs.
