A second large-scale mall makeover was done over the turn of the 20th century. When construction dust settled in late 2001, SOUTHGATE PLAZA featured new Albertsons Food & Drug and Wal-Mart stores.

The new supermarket and drug center at SOUTHGATE was originally planned to be a Lucky / Sav-On. It opened -as an Albertsons- in November 1999. This store pulled out of the mall in 2008. The space was eventually filled by 99 Ranch Market, an Asian-American food emporium. This store welcomed its first shoppers in November 2010.

A standard Wal-Mart operated in the PLAZA between October 2001 and June 2009. The building then sat vacant for over 6 years. A WalMart Neighborhood Market opened in a portion of the space in July 2015.
