A major renovation of the open-air COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA was announced in January 1969. Costing nearly 10 million dollars, the project would add two east side store blocks, build an air-conditioned shopping concourse and full-line J.C. Penney. This store would anchor the south end of the complex. Work on the air-conditioned concourse was completed in August 1970.

Newly-built store blocks are indicated in medium gray on this PLAZA plan. A shiny new J.C. Penney (in light gray) opened its doors in July 1971. With all renovation work completed, the mall spanned around 504,000 leasable square feet and contained thirty-five tenant spaces.
