Carson Pirie Scott anchored the east end of HILLSIDE CENTER for over 40 years. The fully air-conditioned store began business in October 1956. It was comprised of three sales floors; the Lower Level (or basement), Mall Level and Upper Level. All floors were linked via elevator and escalator.

A Kroger supermarket occupied a portion of a freestanding Convenience Center in the mall's north parking area. The store encompassed 21,000 square feet.

Our first HILLSIDE drawing shows the orientation of the shopping hub on its 63-acre site, aside the prospective route of the Congress (Street) Expressway. That thoroughfare opened to traffic 4 years after the mall was completed.
