MALL HALL OF FAME

A gazebo stood in the center of The Market Place. Lower level seating was surrounded by the Upstairs Shoppes -or Above The Market- concourse. Its stores and services included Che's Bar Specialties. Ragamuff 'N and The Wooden Nickle.

One of the mall's amusement-type attractions was The Castle. For 50 cents, patrons could travel through a haunted citadel, viewing monsters, a large gorilla, raven and other creepy figures.

With no vintage store maps available, we had to create a provisional site plan. Hopefully, it is not too inaccurate. We know for certain that -in 1973- OLD TOWNE MALL encompassed approximately 314,800 leasable square feet and contained around 176 retail stores, push cart vendors and restaurants beneath its roof. There was free parking for over 1,000 autos.

Robert R. Brindle, the primary developer of OLD TOWNE, built a second recreational retailing mall in the southwest environs of the Windy City. OLD CHICAGO, dedicated in June 1975, was unsuccessful and was in business for only 5 years. The structure was demolished in 1986.
