In the 1950s and '60s, America's mall-type retail complexes were promoted as either a center, square, shopping city or plaza. By the late '70s, several of these had morphed into quote-unquote "malls", although many had not -yet- been enclosed. So-Cal's FALLBROOK SQUARE was no exception. By 1978, it was officially known as FALLBROOK SQUARE MALL and was still open-air.

In November 1978, FALLBROOK SQUARE MALL housed seventy-one stores and services. Several charter (1963-1966) tenants were still in business. These included Sears, J.C. Penney, Harris & Frank, House of Sight & Sound and the Market Basket grocery store.

In July 1986, an expanded and fully-enclosed FALLBROOK MALL made its debut. Two new anchors -Target and Mervyn's- had come on board in the fall of 1985 and the old twin-screen cinema had been replaced with a new 6-plex, in December 1988.
